There’s a dilemma that every writer faces at some point: Do I write for the masses or stay true to what God is calling me to write? On the surface, it might seem like an easy choice, but trust me, it’s not always that simple. Over the past decade, I’ve wrestled with this question more times than I can count. And while the answer has become clearer in the last five years, the struggle was real.
Did you know I used to write secular fiction? Yep, that was me, and I did pretty well at it too. I built a career, created a pen name that felt like a part of me, and found success in that world. But then, in a season I didn’t see coming, God called me to let it all go and write for Him.
Let me tell you, I didn’t let go easily. I wrestled with the choice. Laying down a career I had built, burying a pen name that had become part of my identity, and walking away from an income with no clear idea of what would come next was terrifying. There was no map, no guide to show me the way forward. But in the midst of that uncertainty, I learned an incredible lesson.
For a long time, I asked myself, “What would my beautiful fellow Christians want to read? What topics would interest them?” I tried to come up with ideas that would please, that would serve well. But every time, the Lord would whisper, “What I put on your heart is for the one chosen by the One.” And that changed everything.
So I’m going to let you in on something. Words. It’s the words written or the words spoken that can change a person or situation. Whether you’re a writer or not… it’s the words we choose to share that have an impact. The power of words is undeniable. They can uplift, challenge, and even transform someone’s life. And when those words are the very Word of God, shared bravely and faithfully, the impact can be even greater.
Maybe you’ve experienced it—reading a scripture at just the right moment, hearing someone speak a truth that resonates so deeply it feels like it was meant just for you. That’s the power of sharing words, whether they’re your own or someone else’s. And when we share the Word of God, we’re not just offering words; we’re offering life, hope, and truth.
It’s not about trying to reach everyone but about trusting that God knows exactly who needs to hear the words He’s placed on your heart or the words He’s already spoken. My job isn’t to figure out the masses; it’s to be faithful in sharing what He’s given me, trusting that He will direct those words to the one who needs them most. And in the words, I pray others see God’s love.
When we let go of our plans and trust in His, something amazing happens. We find that what we thought we were losing was nothing compared to what He was leading us toward. The journey may not be easy, but it’s worth it. And if He’s prompting you to share, to speak, or to write—do it with courage. Your words, especially when they are God’s words, have the power to make a difference in someone’s life.

Thank-you for sharing this message. I have concluded that this is a time to speak and not to be silent, and then - just a few weeks ago - "discovered" Substack after never making much progress elsewhere. Praying for God's further leading and help for everyone engaged in the journey you describe to being truly faithful to Him.
