It’s so easy to get caught up in daily life—our minds racing ahead to the next big goal, the next achievement, the next chapter. We pray for breakthroughs and miracles, and sometimes, we forget the small blessings that surround us every day. These underrated blessings are the ones we often take for granted, the things that don’t always make us stop in awe but quietly sustain our lives.
The other night, while taking a shower, I burst into tears thinking about someone I loved deeply and lost a few years ago. I miss them so extremely some days that my grief breaks open without warning. As I stood there with water cascading over my face, I thought of all the small things I once took for granted. I always assumed they would be there—the warm hugs they gave, the encouraging words they spoke, and the little chocolates they bought just because they knew how much I loved them.
At the time, those small acts seemed routine, almost like a given. But now I see them for what they truly were: blessings from God woven into my everyday life. I didn’t see it then, but every hug, every smile, every small gesture was a gift, a treasure I failed to fully appreciate. I don’t want to wait until things are gone or unavailable to recognize them as the blessings they truly are.
Take for instance, the simple act of leaving the house and making it back home safely. It's something we hardly think about as we rush out the door, running late for work, errands, or social gatherings. Yet, the protection and grace that cover us during each step of that journey is nothing short of a blessing. How many close calls did we not even notice? How often were we shielded from unseen dangers?
Then, there’s the sound of a quick "I love you" shouted down the hallway. In the middle of busy mornings or hectic evenings, these moments may seem rushed, but they’re profound. Those three words carry the weight of connection, care, and belonging. In a world where so many long for love and affirmation, we sometimes overlook just how powerful and sustaining those little expressions of love truly are.
And what about the food in our stomachs? For many of us, meals are just part of the routine, but it’s a gift that shouldn’t go unnoticed. There are so many in this world who go without, yet we have the ability to eat, to nourish our bodies, and to sit around a table with loved ones. Even a simple meal is a testament to provision and care, a reminder that our needs are met each and every day.
The truth is, these small blessings aren’t really small at all. They’re the building blocks of life, the everyday miracles that form the foundation of our well-being. We don’t have to wait for the grand gestures or major victories to feel blessed. Sometimes, the greatest gifts are the ones we don’t even realize we have.
So, as you go about your day today, pause. Take a deep breath and acknowledge the blessings that surround you—the safety, the love, the provision. They may seem ordinary, but they’re nothing short of extraordinary. And when we start to recognise them for what they truly are, our hearts will overflow with gratitude, and we’ll find that we are more blessed than we ever imagined.
love Sarah.
