Have We Forgotten God's Holiness?
There are some topics, I struggle to write. And God’s holiness is one. No matter how long I sit in front of the computer, search the scriptures or try to put my thoughts about it into a coherent sentence… I honestly feel like I won’t do it justice. Oftentimes, I like to stick to what I know, encourage people with stories of how God can meet you in the middle of your mess. But this week, He continued to whisper to me, I Am Holy. I started to really feel the power behind that statement. As I imagined myself standing in the throne room of Heaven, I pictured myself trying to look at the Light of God. The moment it hit me, I fell to my face in complete reverence.
In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in the busyness of life and lose sight of what truly matters. Regrettably, one area where this is prominently evident is in our perception of God's holiness. Somewhere along the way, I feel many have forgotten the awe-inspiring holiness of our Creator.
Life has become increasingly busy, with various distractions constantly vying for our attention. In the midst of this chaos, our focus on God's holiness has diminished. We have become preoccupied with our own desires, ambitions, and the constant pursuit of worldly success, relegating the importance of God's holiness to the background. As a consequence, we have downplayed the significance of God's perfect and pure nature in our daily lives and spiritual walks.
Holy According to the Merriment - Webster Dictionary.
Worthy of complete devotion and trust, divine, set apart, sacred
In recent years, a more casual and "user-friendly" approach to faith has emerged, resulting in a diluted understanding of God's holiness. This diluted theology reduces God to being primarily loving and approachable, while neglecting His holiness and righteousness. Yes, it’s essential to embrace God's love, but we must not lose sight of His holiness, which sets Him apart from all else.
Our secular culture often minimizes the concept of holiness, equating it with outdated traditions or unattainable standards. As Christians, we can easily be swayed by these cultural messages, unintentionally diminishing the significance of God's holiness in our lives. But what we have to remember is this… God's holiness remains unchanged by societal norms and cultural shifts.
Okay, so now that I have tried my hardest to explain why we must remember how Holy our Heavenly Father is, how do we go about remembering to see Him as such?
1. Seek His Face:
Making intentional time for prayer, meditation, and studying Scripture will lead us into a deeper understanding of God's holiness. As we devote ourselves to seeking His face, our perception of His holiness will be reignited.
2. Worship in Awe:
Engaging in meaningful worship helps us reorient our hearts towards God's holiness. When we approach Him with reverence and awe, we are reminded of His greatness and the need to align our lives with His holiness. So, worship your heart out to Him.
3. Embrace His Word:
Immersing ourselves in God's Word will show us His holiness revealed throughout Scripture. Regularly reading and studying the Bible will deepen our understanding of who God is and His desire for us to reflect His holiness in our lives.
4. Pursue a Holy Life:
Recognizing God's holiness should inspire us to pursue holiness in our own lives. Through the empowering work of the Holy Spirit, we can strive to live in accordance with God's holy standards, seeking His guidance and transformation.
I just want to finish with this… As Christians, we must reclaim our understanding of God's holiness. By acknowledging the reasons why we stopped seeing God as holy and committing to rediscover His holiness in our lives, we can experience the abundant blessings that come from walking in close fellowship with a holy God. May we never lose sight of the One who is both loving and holy, as we seek to reflect His character in all that we do.
