I was driving my boys into town the other day and decided to change the radio station. On came this beautiful piece of orchestral music. Teenagers… they just don’t get it. I heard moaning from the back seat and something along the lines of “change the station.” But I was lost… in the beauty of the sound. Each note seemed to whisper to my soul, stirring up a flood of emotions. It felt like the music was speaking directly to me, telling a story that my heart desperately needed to hear. And in that moment, the thought came… God is writing a symphony in my life.
Every moment, every experience, is like a note in this grand piece of music, carefully composed by our loving Creator. There are times when the melody is soft and sweet, filled with peace and beauty. These are the moments when you feel God’s presence so clearly, when your heart is light, and your path is straight. It’s in these times that we can easily see His goodness and love, filling us with joy and gratitude. Those gentle notes remind us of the comfort of His embrace, the assurance of His promises, and the warmth of His unending love.
But just like any symphony, there are crescendos—those overwhelming, chaotic moments that leave you questioning and struggling. When the music feels dissonant and harsh, it’s natural to wonder if God is still with you, if He’s still in control. In these moments, life feels anything but harmonious. The noise can be deafening, and the uncertainty paralyzing. Yet, it is precisely in these turbulent times that He is at work, weaving together a masterpiece you can’t yet fully comprehend.
Think about a skilled composer who knows exactly when to introduce tension and when to bring resolution. God knows what you need to grow, to learn, and to become more like Him. He uses every note, whether joyful or sorrowful, to shape you into His image. The challenging notes, the ones that stretch and strain, are just as essential as the ones that bring joy and ease. They build depth, character, and resilience, crafting a story of redemption and grace.
We often focus on one piece of the entire symphony and forget that every part, whether filled with joy or pain, plays a crucial role in the grand composition. Sometimes, in our narrow perspective, we only see the discord, missing the larger context of the beautiful work God is creating. Trust that He is composing a breathtaking symphony in your life. Even when the music seems off-key, He is crafting something of unparalleled beauty.
To the one who was supposed to read this, don’t get lost in the darkness that surrounds you. God is working everything for your good. Breathe, take a moment, and say, “You are writing my symphony.” Embrace every note, knowing that God is orchestrating a piece far more wonderful than you can imagine. He’s there in every high and every low, every major and minor chord, meticulously blending each element to create a harmonious whole. Remember, you’re not just living in the chaos; you’re part of a divine composition that will one day reveal the fullness of His glory and love.
So, the next time you find yourself in the middle of life’s tumultuous crescendos, hold on to the truth that your life is a symphony written by the greatest Composer of all. Trust in His timing, His purpose, and His unfailing love. The music He’s writing in your life is a testament to His grace, a melody of hope that will echo through eternity.
With love,
Sarah xx
*And yes… just to finish this piece off, I wrote a poem just for my Sparrows. I hope you enjoy it.
Gentle melodies whisper peace, Each note crafted by divine hands. In joy and sorrow, light and dark, God weaves a symphony of life. Soft moments of grace unfold, Amidst trials that shape the heart. In the quiet and the storm, His music flows through every part. Trust in the symphony’s design, In every high and every low. Rest in the beauty of His work, As His melody guides you home. - written by Sarah G. Tomlinson.

Beautiful Sarah. I always loved "beauty from ashes", but I love how you envisioned God writing a symphony and how our lives are part of each section of the music. Beautiful illustration and one I will be remembering. Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
Sarah, although i don't believe in God like you do, i believe in a higher power who's guiding me to my destination, who's also not a vengeful one, but gentle and caring like your parents. I love music, too (my taste in music is very diverse, ranging from classical music to rock-metal and rap), and i truly believe our lives are like a symphony.
